Quick answer
The price depends far more on what the website must do than on how many pages it has. A five-page site that only shows your services is quick to build. The same five pages with online bookings, payments or a members' area is a different project.
Typical prices by type of website
| Type of website | Typical UK price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Do-it-yourself website builder | Monthly plan | Very small budgets, if you have time to build and update it yourself |
| Brochure website (4–6 pages, contact form) | £1,500–£3,500 | Most service businesses: trades, clinics, salons, consultants |
| Custom WordPress website (custom design, blog, basic SEO) | £3,500–£8,000 | Businesses that publish content and want a unique look |
| Online shop (WooCommerce) | From about £5,000 | Selling products online; complex shops can reach £15,000–£20,000 |
| Bespoke web app, portal or system | £20,000+ | Booking systems, customer portals, internal tools |

Monthly and yearly costs
The build is only part of the cost. Plan for these as well:
- Domain name (for example
yourbusiness.co.uk): usually £10–£20 a year. Some first-year offers are cheaper but renew at a higher price. - Hosting: managed WordPress hosting is often £15–£60 a month. A simple, fast site without WordPress can often be hosted for much less.
- Plugins and licences: some WordPress plugins charge £30–£200 each per year.
- Updates and changes: either your own time, or a maintenance plan from your web designer.
- Business email: often a small monthly fee per mailbox.

What changes the price
- Features: online bookings, payments, customer logins and calculators add the most cost.
- Number of pages and content: who writes the text and supplies the photos? Copywriting and photography are often extra.
- Design: a ready-made theme is cheaper than a fully custom design.
- Languages: each extra language (for example English and Urdu, or English and Arabic) adds pages to build and check.
- Connections: linking the site to WhatsApp, your CRM, Google Sheets or an AI assistant.
- Who builds it: large agencies charge for account managers and meetings; a freelancer or small studio is usually cheaper.
How to get a fair quote
Write down what the site must do
List the pages, the actions customers should take (call, book, buy, enquire) and any systems it must connect to.
Ask for a fixed price in writing
Avoid open-ended hourly quotes. A good quote lists what is included, the timeline and the price of each stage.
Check who owns what
The domain, hosting account and website files should be in your name, so you can move or change supplier later.
Ask about monthly costs up front
Hosting, maintenance, plugins and email can add up. Get them in writing before you agree.
